Why doesn't ChatGPT recommend my business?
Guide · Updated 13 October 2026
Because it cannot find enough sources that agree on who you are, what you do and where. When someone asks ChatGPT, Gemini or Google's AI answers for a business, the assistant searches the web and names the businesses that several sources confirm: your own website, your Google Business Profile and reviews, directories, and other sites that mention you. If your website cannot be read, or nothing else mentions you, the assistant has nothing it can safely repeat.
How assistants choose who to name.
Google says plainly that its AI Overviews and AI Mode draw on the same index and the same ranking systems as ordinary search. There is no separate AI index and no special trick. A page that Google cannot find or trust will not be quoted in its AI answers either.
A June 2026 study of 3 240 AI answers about South African brands found two more things. Assistants lean on a small set of trusted South African sites, such as BusinessTech and MyBroadband. And they recommend the business that is clearly "the one for" a particular job; well-known but vague brands get mentioned without being recommended.
Five reasons you are not being named.
1. Your website cannot be read
Many sites, especially ones made quickly with AI website builders, arrive as an empty page that only fills in once JavaScript runs. A person sees a website; a crawler may see nothing. The free website check tells you in ten seconds.
2. Your facts are not written down
An assistant can only repeat what a page states. If your prices, the area you serve, your hours and your services are in a picture, a PDF or nowhere, there is nothing to quote. Write them in plain text, and answer the questions customers ask you on the phone.
3. No Google Business Profile, or no reviews
For local businesses, Google names its Business Profiles as one of the ways businesses appear in AI answers. A verified profile with real reviews is free and is often the single biggest step.
4. Nobody else mentions you
Assistants trust what several independent sources agree on. List your business, with exactly the same name, phone and address everywhere, on the directories and guides people in your field use, and earn a mention from the local paper, your suppliers or your industry body.
5. Your site is blocking them
Some hosting and security settings block AI crawlers by default. In August 2026 we found that a provider's default setting had quietly added rules to our own site blocking several AI companies' crawlers. Check your robots.txt, or ask whoever runs your site.
What does not help.
Google's own guidance, updated July 2026, says you do not need special AI files, special markup, or content rewritten into "chunks" for AI, and warns against chasing fake mentions. Be wary of anyone selling those as AI optimisation.
What it looks like when it works.
Visit Citrusdal, a tourism guide we built and run, was cited by Microsoft Copilot in 42% of its answers about the town by October 2026, ten weeks after launch, and ChatGPT was sending a tenth of its page views. The work was the list above: readable pages, every fact written down and checked, and many sources linking to it. Read the case study.
Questions.
What is AEO?
Answer engine optimisation: making sure assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Google's AI answers can read your website, trust it and name your business. It is built on the same foundations as SEO, so we do the two together.
Do I need an llms.txt file or special code for AI?
Not for Google. Google says its AI features need no special files, markup or schema, and that it does not use llms.txt. Some other assistants may read such files; none has said it ranks businesses by them. Your time is better spent on the steps above.
How do I know if AI assistants mention my business?
Ask them, the way a customer would, once a month, and write down who they name. Google Search Console now has a report for AI Overviews and AI Mode, and Bing Webmaster Tools shows how often Copilot cites your pages. Both are free.
Can someone guarantee that ChatGPT will recommend me?
No. Nobody controls what an assistant says. Anyone who guarantees it is selling something they cannot deliver. What can be done is to make your business easy to find, easy to read and easy to vouch for, which is what assistants look for.
Can assistants read your site?
The free check shows whether your pages arrive empty, whether your business details are there for Google and AI, and what to fix first.
